We went to the Batley oxfam centre for the day and I was amazed at the size of the place and all of the rails of clothing we saw as we walked in! We were given a talk from the staff who were really enthusiastic about everything Oxfam does which was great to see. We were then given a tour of the building and started some group work. In group work we were asked to view mood boards of current trends then sort through a big tub of clothing and organise them into the trends as well as separating any vintage and things to be sold in the shops. It was a really good exercise as we had no idea what we were going to find and we were surprised to discover a few treasures as well as some more strange items!! During the day we also discussed the possibility of doing summer placements which is something that would really appeal to me and as much as I’d like to volunteer currently, I don’t have much free time so the summer would be great.
At the end of the day we had to select items to use for our current customisation brief. I was looking for something extravagant and hideous in a way as I wanted something I could make a big transformation from. I bought a red velvet long sleeved dress (that looks like a monk outfit!), a puffy sleeved, high necked, floor length blue polka dot dress (little bo peep eat your heart out!), a floor length black pleated skirt and a pinky red rose embellished jacket! I could already picture ideas for what I wanted to create and was pretty happy to receive a free pair of sunglasses with my purchases!
