March 1st 2015 – Photoshoot

It’s shoot day!!! I woke up bright and early, ready to get ready and go to meet the models and MUA’s.

Unfortunately I checked my phone and had received a message from Row (model) saying she had a dental emergency and couldn’t make the shoot. I posted a last minute casting online to see if anyone would be available to step in.

As I was gathering the props at home ready to set off, Neola (model) messaged me explaining that she couldn’t make the shoot as she had some family problems that meant she needed to stay home. I was really disappointed and worried that the shoot wouldn’t work with only one of the three models. I sent several messages to urgently try and find replacement models but no one was available at such short notice.

I went and met the model Felicity in Leeds and I was really impressed with how she looked and this was before we’d done the hair and makeup! We went to Mr. Foley’s (my work) to get ready. The hair and makeup girls were a little late but we soon got started. I explained the situation with the other models cancelling and the hair and makeup girls offered to come to the location with us and change Felicity’s hair and makeup to suit the outfit changes so it gave a few different looks. This was amazingly helpful and I’m really grateful to them. When we arrived at the location, Felicity got ready into the first outfit. Kate the photographer and the videographer were about 40 minutes late unfortunately due to traffic but it gave the makeup girls time to touch up Felicity’s hair and makeup some more. When the photographer and videographer arrived they were apologetic and really helpful with creative ideas and direction. The staff at the diner had previously told me about props we could use but on the day of the shoot a different staff member was there and they weren’t sure what props they had meant. However, I had taken some vintage roller skates and I bought a fantastic ice cream sundae and a glass of wine which all worked really well as props.

On reflection, I’m really glad we used just the one model as she worked to a really high standard and had the ideal look for the shoot. Also, there wouldn’t have been time to get more models ready within the time frame we had at the location and to get as many great shots as we did.

Feb 28th 2015 – Details

I sent pictures of the outfits I’d created to the photographer Kate Love. She told me her friend who is a videographer would be interested in joining us for the shoot and making a behind the scenes video. This was amazing news! I had been wishing I’d arranged a videographer previously so this was really helpful.

The model Felicity messaged me confirming for the shoot and explaining that she had fallen down the stairs so had bruises on the arm but I explained this would be ok as we could always cover them with makeup or edit them out. And I obviously asked if she was ok!

Feb 25th 2015 – model update

I messaged the models George, Neola and Felicity with the time and location to meet this Sunday. George replied saying she wouldn’t be able to make it so early as she would be working late the night before. I explained that it would have to be that early so we had time for hair and makeup and told her i was sorry but I would love to work with her some other time. This was shame but I couldn’t change the times with the other models, the MUA’s Nd the location. I messaged my friend Row to see if she could model and she said she would let me know if she would be available.

I also spoke to the photographer Kate Love and sent her some images of the models and some pose ideas.

Feb 24th 2015 – Black shorts!

Today I was in college and made the high waisted black shorts. The pleated skirt I was customising had plenty of fabric to work with so Nikki showed me the culottes pattern and how to use it for short shorts. I made a waist band from some stiff fabric and ran the elastic through it to create a strong waistband. I sewed the seams of the shorts then attached them to the waistband. When doing this I accidentally sewed over the elastic which stopped the stretch. So i had to unpick it and reattach it. It then worked fine and I just need to be more careful next time.

I also sent a message to the models mentioning what I’d like them to bring to the shoot but they didn’t reply.

I messaged the two Leeds City College students called Jess and Jaycee and they were both really enthusiastic about doing the hair and makeup ideas and sent me some images of them practising the winged eyeliner look I wanted. I was talking to the MUA’s in a whatsapp group they created for us so I’m unable to print the conversations.

Feb 23rd 2015 – MUA update

Today I messaged an MUA I had previously contacted to see if she would be available for the shoot. Unfortunately she was busy with another shoot that day so wouldn’t be able to make it.

I decided to email the Hair and Makeup tutor at Leeds City College to see if they knew of any students that could be interested in helping out for the shoot. She emailed me back promptly suggesting two students and giving me their details to contact them directly. This was great news and in hindsight I wish I had just contacted them in the first place as they would be reliable and it would be greatly benefitting their portfolios also.

I was also in contact with Luppy’s diner checking the time we can go down on Sunday, which was fine.

Feb 18th 2015 – red jacket update

Today I worked on the red jacket some more. When looking at the new halter top there was something I didn’t quite like. One of my classmates suggested removing the buttons or using red buttons. I decided to remove the buttons and sew up the button holes which really worked to create the look I wanted. I then used red tape to finish the edges and armholes of the top and attached a press stud. I was really happy with the result and it meant another garment was complete.

Feb 16th 2015 – shoot update

The makeup artist Jessica White who I had been talking with about doing the hair and makeup for the shoot had agreed to do it. The photographer then messaged me saying to look at Jessica White’s Facebook page. She had posted a status cancelling all upcoming work as she wasn’t feeling up to it. This was really disappointing but I didn’t feel a need to message her after seeing this.

I then messaged Laura Dawson who has previously done my hair lesson for me to see if she would be available but unfortunately she was busy.

I had also been in contact with the model Neola who sent me her phone number so I could contact her directly.

Feb 14th 2015 – hairstyle lesson

Today I bought myself a 3 hour lesson at a local vintage style hairdressers to learn how to do pin up and retro hair styles. I showed the hairdresser pictures of what I wanted to learn and she showed me in my hair then watched me do it to make sure I knew what to do. I found this really helpful and I now know what hairstyles I want for the photoshoot and I can do them myself if a hair stylist is unavailable.
